When I decided to start beekeeping in 2021, it was only going to be a hobby with about 3 beehives. The Right to Farm Act allowed me to keep bees on my property only if it was a business intended to make money. I had a choice, to find some land outside the city or do the beekeeping at home by making it a business. It may sound funny, but I wasn't all that excited about making my hobby a business. A hobby is something you do for the fun of it when you want to do it; a business is something you have to do, even when you're not having fun. It didn't take me long to realize how stupid it was to apply a hobby mentality to raising animals. So it all sort of came together. Business or hobby, I still needed to be dedicated to the bees and being a business, I can make some money. I'm a disabled Vet. I know I can't go out and work, I'd get fired within a few days. So, having a beekeeping business became a great idea. The business started as Honey Jar Farms. I think the right business name is important and, these days, it's best to find one that you can also have the .comm domain. I did think the name was real great. It sounded like a farm that raised Honey Jars. It had honey in the name, honey comes in jar, and it's a farm, and honeyjarfarms.com was available. One day, out of nowhere, Urban Wild Honey came to mind. I looked up the domain, available, Woot Woot! Urban Wild Honey. I still have Honey Jar Farms registered and I own the Domain, but Urban Wild Honey is the best name ever for an apiary located in a city.
Years ago, I didn't have any deep thoughts about raising bee. I just thought it would be something fun and interesting to do. Now Forty years later, it has become a very important issue. Bees provide the pollination for a large amount of our food supply. The Save the Bee movements started, which was misunderstood, and caused a huge amount of people around the world to start raising honeybees. Now the biologist are telling us that the increase in honeybees is causing the worldwide decline in native bees. Wow, I just wanted to have fun with some bees and collect some honey. I don't think the issue is as straight forward as the biologist want to make it seem. I don't think he beekeepers aren't the bad guys in this situation.
